In spring 2004, the Geisel Library at the University of
California at San Diego will unveil a three-part, yearlong
rotating exhibit highlighting “The Dr. Seuss You
Never Knew,” “Dr. Seuss between the Covers”,
featuring Theodor Seuss Geisel’s never before seen
drawings and cartoons, and “The Cat in the Hat for
President”, Dr. Seuss as an American icon.
The first part of the yearlong exhibit will showcase
Ted Geisel’s early work; from his school days
in Springfield, MA, to his work during World War II.
While most people are familiar with Geisel’s children’s
books, they are unaware of his highly successful career
as a commercial and advertising artist and his strong
editorial cartoons. This portion of the exhibit will
include:
• Early photographs of Theodor Seuss Geisel
• Early work for his school paper
• Cartoons for the Jack-O-Lantern at
Dartmouth
• Oxford notebook & European travels
• Commercial and advertising work from the 1920s
and 1930s
• Editorial cartoons
