McElligot’s Pool

Cal Ripken, Jr.
Former Major League Baseball Player

Every child should grow up with Dr. Seuss. We all have great memories of Dr. Seuss’ books that we read over and over while growing up. McElligot’s Pool is another part of that library and one that I enjoy very much.

The gift that Dr. Seuss had was to entertain us in his books with his fun rhymes and colorful illustrations while, at the same time, teaching us a valuable lesson without our even realizing it until the end.

In this particular instance we learn about perseverance and patience. The boy is fishing unsuccessfully for hours in McElligot’s Pool when a man tells him that there are no fish there and he is a fool if he stays. The boy displays great hope as he thinks about the possibility of fish being in the pool and swimming towards his line.

I have always loved reading Dr. Seuss with my kids and watching as they laugh throughout the story and then come to understand the message being sent. Simply put, I can not imagine a world without Dr. Seuss’ books.
