I grew up with Dr. Seuss. Hop on Pop, The Cat in the Hat, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Who-ville, Mulberry Street, Cindy-lou Who – my mind is etched with this man’s amazing stories, whimsical places and unforgettable characters. What a thrill it is now to curl up with my own children and revisit this wonderful world.

Always a blast to read out loud, these stories surprise me coming back to them as an adult with the profound underpinnings beneath these cheerful visions. What a delight it is to realize the Doctor’s lethal wit as he joyously skewers the arrogance and fear that tear the world apart. The Butter Battle Book is a brilliant indictment of the arms race, of nationalism run amok, of the simple fears we all have of anyone who is different from us – quite an achievement in a brief, hilarious “children’s” book. I am so grateful to Dr. Seuss for helping me fill my children with compassion, with whimsy and with joy.
