Scrapbooking with Seuss

Turn a copy of Oh, the Places You’ll Go! into a memory book to mark a major milestone in your child’s life. Dr. Seuss’s illustrations in this book lend themselves naturally to the addition of photos and other mementos without disturbing the wonderfully wise verse.

What you’ll need:

  • a copy of Oh, the Places You’ll Go!
  • your child’s photos, keepsakes, awards, or artwork
  • photo tape or photo corners
  • scissors and glue
  • photo pocket pages or envelopes (optional)
  • embellishments such as ribbon, stickers, or glitter (optional)

Directions:

Narrow the focus of your memory book. It could highlight all the places your child has been; offer a roundup of your child’s participation in sports, arts, music, dance or other favorite activity; or cover a unique experience with family or friends.

Go through photos and other memorabilia and loosely organize it to tell your child’s story. Take a cue from Dr. Seuss’s words to help guide your layout, but also plan to add captions and other words of your own, especially dates and the names of people and places.

Page through the book to look for good placement of photos and other items. See what works and make note of items you want to crop or copy to shrink or crop. If you’re planning to add other decorative elements like ribbons or stickers, plan their placement too.

When you’re ready to secure items with tape, photo corners or glue, work on one page at a time, letting each page dry before starting the next or closing the book.

Consider adding additional photos using clear pocket pages that you glue into the book. You can also make pockets to hold photos or other keepsakes by adding envelopes to your pages or inside covers.

When your book is finished, you’ll have a gift for your child that keeps giving for a lifetime.
